Autodesk will launch 3ds Max Indie, its discounted subscription to its 3D animation software for artists earning less than $ 100,000 a year, in a wider range of countries on August 7, 2020.
The change, announced in emails to existing subscribers that have been republished on social media, will make 3ds Max indie subscriptions available in countries across Europe, Asia and South America.
Maya Indie, the corresponding offer for Maya users, will also be available worldwide on August 7th.
Use the full version of 3ds Max or Maya for $ 250 / year
3ds Max Indie and Maya Indie were launched last summer and offer users with a single license for the full version of the software less than $ 100,000 / year of gross annual design revenue.
The exact price varies by country but is currently $ 250 / year.
The program was originally only available in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK, and the US. However, Autodesk announced in March that it was planning to roll out 3ds Max Indie worldwide.
3ds Max Indie will soon be available all over the world, but not in every country
According to an email to 3ds Max Indie subscribers republished on the Stack 3ds Max Facebook group, the company will "launch 3ds Max for indie users worldwide * starting August 7, 2020".
The footnote attached to this asterisk indicates that Autodesk means "worldwide" but not "in every country in the world". Indie subs will initially be available online in 26 other countries:
China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore
- Europe and the Middle East
Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey
- South and Central America
If your own country isn't on this list, don't give up hope of getting a 3ds Max Indie subscription just yet. In the comments on the Facebook thread, 3ds Max Product Manager Chip Weatherman posted the following:
“As far as I know, the rollout will cover more countries over time. This is the next group of countries where we have received legal approval. "
Updated August 7, 2020: Autodesk contacted us to let us know that this is not the case and that the indie edition of 3ds Max will only be available "when we have an eStore worldwide". More details later in the story.
Maya Indie should be available wherever Autodesk has an eStore
For Maya users, TJ Galda, Autodesk's Senior Product Line Manager for Maya and the Entertainment Collection, tweeted that Maya Indie will be "available everywhere we have an eStore" starting August 7th.
The list of Autodesk locations around the world can be found here: It includes the countries listed above plus Hong Kong and South Africa, as well as collection locations for Latin America, the Middle East and other European countries.
Updated August 7, 2020: 3ds Max Indie and Maya Indie are now available in 31 countries worldwide.
The Autodesk Frequently Asked Questions describes the indie products as being available on "any standard Autodesk e-store website".
We suspect the collection points for Latin America, the Middle East and other European countries are not considered "standard" e-stores, but we are not sure about Hong Kong and South Africa.
The eligibility requirements are largely the same as for the original rollout, although there is a new restriction: The indie products cannot be used for "projects valued at more than 100,000 USD".
Additionally, the price has increased slightly since last year: at the time of publication, new indie subscriptions to 3ds Max or Maya from the US were $ 265 / year.
Updated September 3, 2020: Autodesk has added 15 additional countries to its eligibility list, making 3ds Max Indie and Maya Indie available in 46 countries worldwide.
The expanded list of eligible countries is as follows: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, India, Ireland , Italy, Japan, Korea, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States.
Indie subscriptions are not available in Hong Kong or South Africa.
Autodesk informed us that both countries are listed in the country selector because users can purchase through a reseller. However, there is no e-store in these countries, although they have product centers.
Pricing and system requirements
3ds Max Indie is available for Windows 7+. Maya Indie is available for Windows 7 and 10, RHEL / CentOS 7.3-7.7 Linux and macOS 10.13+.

The exact price varies between countries, especially considering taxes. It is currently $ 265 per year in the US. In the UK the price is currently £ 294 / year plus 20% VAT.
