BURBANK – The Animation Guild Executive Board has decided to donate $ 210,000 to all members of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) through the Motion Picture & Television Fund (MPTF) and the Labor Community Services Department of the Los Angeles Federation of Support Labor.
While most sectors of the entertainment industry suffer a significant loss of jobs as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, most of the work of the animation guild members has not been affected and guild membership has increased since the last quarter. As a result, the board decided that the animation guild IATSE Local 839, as part of the larger IATSE community, should do so by supporting those who are in need now or who need help in the future.
"It is very difficult to meet other union representatives and hear about the struggles that our IATSE brothers and sisters are facing," said Steve Kaplan, Animation Guild company representative. “So many people are in need. However, our guild members were very lucky. The employers for animation quickly understood that our work can continue effectively from home. Times are difficult for all of us, but 839 members are in a unique position to help the rest of our IATSE family. Donating these funds was the fastest way for us to do this. "
"We have the unique blessing that we can still work. I think it is our duty to help others in IATSE who are currently having a difficult time," added Board Member Jack Cusumano.
The MPTF will receive $ 200,000 from the animation guild to support all IATSE members, while the Labor Community Services will receive $ 10,000 to support their ongoing efforts to bring food to union members.
