A half-hour spin-off of the film from 2018 officially earned Starz a series contract.
The world of “blindspotting” can be seen on the small screen: Starz has lit a spin-off series based on the 2018 film that follows Jasmine Cephas Jones & # 39; s character.
Per Starz, the series revolves around Ashley, who was hot on the heels of a middle-class life in Oakland until Miles, her 12-year-old partner and father of her son, is suddenly imprisoned, letting her navigate chaotic and humorous existential crisis as she is forced to move in with Miles & # 39; mother and half-sister.
The half-hour series is written and executive produced by Rafael Casal and Daveed Diggs, who starred, wrote and produced the original film. Casal will act as the show runner for the series and will play a recurring role. Jess Wu Calder and Keith Calder will executive produce the film alongside Emily Gerson Saines, Ken Lee and Tim Palen. The series is produced for Starz by Lionsgate Television.
A number of episodes and an expected release date were not given.
"Rafael, Daveed and Jasmine created a beautiful movie that we believe translates perfectly into a compelling show for Starz," said Christina Davis, Starz's president of original programming, in a statement. “This provocative and powerful narrative couldn't be more timely, and if we take the story from Ashley's perspective, we can shed light on so many important social issues that characters and audiences continue to grapple with. ”
The original "Blindspotting" film was well received by critics, including IndieWire's Eric Kohn, who particularly praised Diggs' performance in his review, arguing that it would make up for some of the film's "bumpier moments".
"'Blindspotting' offers a handful of such amazing moments in an otherwise straightforward look at two lower-class Oakland friends struggling to find their place in a sea of gentrification," Kohn said in his review. “Ultimately, the movie belongs to Diggs, a Tony winner for 'Hamilton' who makes himself a real movie star with a fully realized performance that slightly outshines the bumpier moments. He is complimented by his creative partner Casal as the couple brings fascinating chemistry to the uncertainty that defines their lives. "
"Blindspotting" will be part of a growing line of Starz original series including "Outlander", "American Gods" and the recently premiered "Power Book II: Ghost". Starz was home to indie film adaptations and genre-breaking half-hour originals. A new episode of "The Girlfriend Experience," inspired by Steven Soderbergh's independent film of the same name, is also on the way, as is the spin-off series "The Continental" from "John Wick". Meanwhile, "Blindspotting" will follow in the efficient and well-discussed steps of Starz's dramatic "Girlfriend Experience", the horror comedy "Ash vs. Evil Dead" and the family drama "Vida".
