Boris FX has released Mocha Pro 2021, a major update to its planar tracking software that can track both organic and rigid surfaces for tasks like digital makeup and replacing logos on clothing.
The version also redesigns Mocha Pro's AdjustTrack module, offers the ability to export tracking data in Alembic format, and introduces a built-in Python editor into the plugin versions of the software.
Track curved and deforming organic and rigid flat surfaces
The most important change in Mocha Pro is PowerMesh, the new system for tracking organic and curved surfaces.
The functionality makes it possible to track objects in Mocha that would previously have required special 3D tracking software – especially faces and clothing.
According to Boris FX, it uses a workflow similar to that used to track rigid objects, with Mocha doing "most of the extra work" for you.
Users identify the key area of the frame using Mocha's standard spline tools. The software generates a 2D mesh that deforms with the object to be tracked.
The automatically generated mesh can then be adjusted manually in the course of the track.
Uses shown in the Boris FX demo videos range from digital makeup to adding logos to clothing to tracking bike helmets, newspapers and even the membrane of a trampoline.
In either case, the object to be tracked stays more or less directly on the camera, but it looks like the system can handle at least some degree of rotation and deformation.
Export PowerMesh tracking data in Alembic format or directly to After Effects
Mesh generation is a subplanar tracking process that is applied in one pass to standard Mocha planar tracking, which Boris FX describes as "fairly fast" compared to optical flow systems.
PowerMesh tracking data can be exported in Alembic format – newly supported in Mocha Pro 2021 – and used in any compatible application including Nuke, Fusion, Flame, and most 3D software.
Alternatively, tracks can be exported directly to After Effects zeros using the Mocha Pro After Effects plug-in.
Can also be used for paint jobs and rotoscopic workflows
PowerMesh also shares Silhouette's image warping code, which Boris FX bought last year.
Users can remove the area of the frame tracked in Mocha Pro's stabilization module, paint or touch up the stabilized version, and then skew the result back to match the footage.
Surprisingly, the functionality can also speed up rotoscoping, as the PowerMesh track automatically deforms roto-splines to reduce the need for manual adjustments.
The workflow can be seen in the video above at 7:00 a.m. In this case, a seal can be rotoscoped. However, the same workflow can also be used for hard surfaces as well as organic objects such as animals and humans.
Better manual correction for difficult routes
Further changes in Mocha Pro 2021 are AdjustTrack 2.0, a new version of the software module for manual correction of slip or drift tracks.
Instead of limiting you to four-point corrections, Mocha Pro now automatically sets the number of points so users can add additional custom points if needed.
Boris FX says the results are more robust when the object being tracked deviates from the screen or is temporarily obscured by foreground objects.
Integrated Python scripting in the plugins, support of ProRes export in the standalone edition
Under the hood, the plugin versions of Mocha Pro no longer have a process, which frees up system resources that should improve performance and stability.
The plugins also get the integrated Python script editor, which was previously only available in standalone mode.
The standalone edition itself supports the ProRes codec from Apple.
Prices and availability
Mocha Pro 2021 is available as a standalone tool for Windows 7+, RHEL / CentOS 6+ Linux and macOS 10.12+.
Integration plugins are available for After Effects and Premiere Pro CC 2014+, Media Composer 8+, Nuke, Fusion, Silhouette, Vegas Pro, and HitFilm Pro. The price of the software depends on the host platform.
A new license costs $ 695 for the Adobe, Avid, or OFX plugins, $ 995 for all plugins, or $ 1,495 for the standalone edition plus all plugins.
