Boris FX has released Optics, an image editing toolkit that promises “visual effects for photographers”.

The new product is a renamed version of the Digital Film Tools DFT that Boris FX acquired last year and has now been expanded to include filters from Boris FX's Sapphire library with effect plug-ins for compositing and editing software.

Optics is available as a plugin for Photoshop and Lightroom as well as a standalone application for Windows and MacOS, all of which are available under a single license.

Use sapphire filters in Photoshop and Lightroom as well as compositing software
Optics provides 75 of Sapphire's most popular filters – including glow, lens, light leak, blur, defocus, and digital damage – for still image editing and photo retouching.

The toolset comprises a total of 160 filters. Boris FX describes it as "the only Photoshop filter set that specifically simulates filters for optical cameras".

Users also get over 85 color correction presets based on the presets used for filming, as well as a gobo library with over 750 lighting effects.

The software also includes an integrated layer system and masking tools as well as variation and seed generators to automatically generate variant looks for an image based on filter parameters.

The Photoshop plugin enables changes to be applied non-destructively as smart filters.

The standalone edition allows you to preview the results of edits in addition to the source image and batch processing large amounts of images.

Pricing and system requirements
Optics 2021 is available as a plugin for Photoshop CC and higher, Photoshop Elements 2018+ and Lightroom Classic as well as a standalone application for Windows 10 and macOS 10.13+.

A new perpetual license costs $ 149. The rent is $ 9 / month or $ 99 / year. A single license provides access to the plugins and the standalone editions. DFT itself is still available for compiling and editing apps.
