Breaking Down the 72nd Emmy Award Nominations

After the studio closed earlier this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, producers of animated and VFX-driven episodic series that were deep in production had to spin quickly to find safe and effective ways to do their jobs break up. The production teams quickly switched gears – from voice actors building their own sound booths at home to artists from all walks of life in animation and VFX production setting up remote workstations, motion capture devices, and other digital tools using the were necessary for the safe continuation of their work.

And now it's time to give credit where credit is due by recognizing some of the amazing animation and visual effects work that has graced our ever-expanding world of streaming services and television channels, an explosion of new shows along with perennials Favorites who have brought up needed a smile during these isolating days of the pandemic.

This year the 72nd annual Primetime Emmy Awards are taking place. The animation and VFX line-up (listed below) is rich, from Star Wars and The Mandalorian to Big Mouth and Westworld. With three nominations, The Simpsons is once again in the spotlight, closely followed by Big Mouth and The Mandalorian. The nomination categories include outstanding animated programming, voice-over performance for characters, short-form animated programming, children's programming, special visual effects, and special visual effects in a supporting role.

With the Emmy Awards voting now open and running through Monday, August 31st, we wanted to break down some of the nominees in the main Animation and VFX categories. The full list of nominations in all categories can be viewed Here on the television academy website. The 72nd Emmy Awards will be broadcast live on ABC on September 20th.

72nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards

Big mouth, Netflix

BoJack Horseman is set in an alternate world where humans and anthropomorphic animals live together in Hollywood. It is another adult animated series created by Raphael Bob-Waksberg and starring Will Arnett (BoJack), Amy Sedaris, Alison Brie and Paul F. Tompkins. and Aaron Paul. Arnett plays the "rider" and slurred star of a 1990s sitcom who plans to make a celebrity comeback with an autobiography. The series has been recognized for its realistic portrayal of depression, trauma, addiction, self-destructive behavior, racism, sexism, and sexuality. Inspired by the infamous Back to the Future movies, Rick and Morty follow the time-traveling, dazzling, almost hypnotic adventures of shy Morty Smith and his mad scientist and alcoholic grandfather Rick. The adult science fiction animated sitcom created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon for Cartoon Network's late night program block Adult Swim has received critical acclaim for its originality, creativity, and humor. As the winner of the Primetime Emmy Award 2019 for an outstanding animation program, a fifth season for Rick and Morty was confirmed in May 2020.

The Simpsons, FOX

A groundbreaking and iconic show for over 30 years, The Simpsons is still a favorite in the animated television universe. The series was created in 1989 by Matt Groening for FOX and shows in a comedic way the everyday life of the working class and the domestic dynamics of a family of five – Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie. Groening's animation of a loving but dysfunctional family borrowed the names of his own family members, although he replaced his own name with "Bart". Forky asks a question to Disney +

Forky Asks a Question is set after Toy Story 4 and is the second Pixar television series since Star Command's Buzz Lightyear. The series focuses on the character of the handmade toy Forky (voiced by Tony Hale) as he asks various questions about life to his friends – Hamm, Rex, Trixie, Buttercup, Oldtimer, Chairol Burnett, and Melephant Brooks. The series aired on Disney + from November 2019 to January 2020. Hale has said that the short and cute series, directed by Toy Story animator Bob Peterson, is about answering questions that people may be embarrassed about: "What is a rodeo?" to "What is marriage?"

Robot chicken, adults swim

Based on the humorous photo comic "Twisted ToyFare Theater", Robot Chicken is a stop-motion sketch comedy series that was created and produced by Seth Green and Matthew Senreich for Adult Swim. Steven Universe Future, cartoon network

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, Netflix

Star Wars Resistance is a 3D animated, cel-shaded science fiction series from Lucasfilm Animation that tells the story of Kazuda Xiono, a New Republic pilot enlisted by the Resistance to spy on the growing threat posed by the First Order . The animation premiered on Disney Channel in October 2018, and the series ended in January 2020 after 40 episodes. Resistance, created by Dave Filoni, who previously directed, wrote and produced in various combinations for the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels, won the 2019 Saturn Award for best animated series on television debut season. Central Park, Apple TV +

Central Park starring Kristen Bell, Tituss Burgess and Josh Gad is a musically animated sitcom created for Apple TV + by Loren Bouchard, Nora Smith and Josh Gad. The series, which premiered in May 2020, centers on the Tillerman-Hunter family, who live in Central Park, and who must save the park from a greedy land developer, heiress, and entrepreneur named Bitsy Brandenham. Crank Yankers, Comedy Central

Jimmy Kimmel is co-producer with Adam Carolla and Daniel Kellison on the animated puppet comedy Crank Yankers. The series features recent “crank” calls (prank calls) from regulars and celebrity guests, which are re-enacted by on-screen mannequins to visually show what actually happens during the call. Crank Yankers originally premiered on Comedy Central in 2002 and returned to MTV2 in February 2007. 12 years later, in February 2019, Kimmel announced on Jimmy Kimmel Live! that the show will be revived on Comedy Central for a fifth season of 20 episodes. The new season starts with phone calls and includes pranks on social media and other platforms.

The Mandalorian, Disney +

Stranger Things, Netflix

The 80s-inspired horror science mystery series by the Duffer Brothers was first released on Netflix in July 2016. Set in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, the first season of Stranger Things follows a group of young children who go in search of their missing girlfriend and discover a runaway girl her age with inexplicable supernatural powers. As the series progresses, other and terrifying phenomena plague the town of Hawkins and the people who live there. Stranger Things is saturated with visual CGI effects and is based on homages to movies and video games of the 80s. It has won six Primetime Emmy Awards and renewed for fourth and fifth seasons.

Vikings, history

The History Channel's historical drama series, Vikings, by Michael Hirst, is an intense dark age drama based on the Viking story "The Story of the Sons of Ragnar" as well as other historical documents from the oral tradition of the Vikings. Ragnar Lothbrok, played by Travis Fimmel, and his wife Lagertha, played by Katheryn Winnick, were farmers in Norway at the beginning of the so-called Viking Age. WestWorld, HBO

Jonathan Nolan's and Lisa Joy's science fiction HBO series Westworld is a dystopian western based on the 1973 film of the same name. Westworld is an expensive theme park with a Wild West world in which robot hosts live, who can hardly be distinguished from humans. Because of the hosts' security protocols, guests can (and do) live any fantasy in Westworld without affecting the hosts. The recently sentient hostess Dolores Abernathy, played by Evan Rachel Wood, learns of her android existence and tries to find others and break free from her submissive chains. The series is oversensitive to CGI details, so the production quality of the visual effects can compete with any VFX-controlled feature film on a large budget. HBO signed a fourth season of Westworld in April 2020, and the series has won five Primetime Emmy Awards.

Lost in space, Netflix

Watchmen is an American superhero drama series that continues the 1986 DC Comics series of the same name, created by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons.
