Virtual SCAD AnimationFest 2020 Coming September 25-26

The Savannah College of Art and Design's celebrated fourth SCAD AnimationFest is practically happening this year. The festival presented by SCADFILM offers innovative and insightful content every hour during the two-day virtual event using leading streaming technology and event management platforms.

SCAD AnimationFest 2020 will take place September 25-26 and will feature exclusive screenings, panels, and presentations from top talent and alumni from Netflix, Epic Games, Pixar, Nickelodeon, Dreamworks, Amazon, and others. Highlights include presentations by Mike McMahan, creator of Star Trek: Lower Decks, and members of his creative team, as well as Raphael Bob-Waksberg and Kate Purdy, co-creators of Undone.

The SCAD leadership has worked with renowned creatives and studios to develop a dynamic program that represents many of the university's best courses, including animation, visual effects, motion media design, film and television, and interactive design and game development. The program will also feature many SCAD alumni who have become leaders in their creative careers, as well as outstanding student work.

The creation of Amazon Studios reversed

Join the co-creators of Undone, Raphael Bob-Waksberg and Kate Purdy, and share the creative process that led to the creation of this groundbreaking, genre-breaking animated series about a young woman's complex journey to decipher her past and the mystery of To solve her father's death.

A conversation with Avatar: the last Airbender creator Bryan Konietzk

In the summer of 2020, Avatar: The Last Airbender wrote Netflix as the first series to stay in the top 10 for 65 days. The Peabody Winner Series revolves around 12-year-old Aang discovering the power and responsibility of being An Avatar and the last of the Airbenders, which first ran on Nickelodeon from 2005 to 2008 and is a huge hit. The series has released graphic novels, video games, and a sequel, The Legend of Korra. Framestore Presents: Behind the Effects of HBO's Lovecraft Country

When the team that adapted Matt Ruff's Lovecraft Country for television began to take stock of all the creatures and myths from the works of Lovecraft that needed to be realized, they challenged Framestore as a creative partner who knew how to do the unimaginable To bring life to life. Working closely with producer and showrunner Misha Green, Framestore delivered a wide range of VFX that can be seen in the 10-part HBO series. Talk to members of the visual effects and animation team about this innovative series.

Behind the Scenes Conversation: CBS All Access' Star Trek: Lower Decks with Creator Mike McMahan and the series animators

Talk to series creator, executive producer, and showrunner Mike McMahan (Rick and Morty, Solar Opposites) and series animators and writers about the making and development of the Star Trek Universe's first animated comedy series, CBS All Access' Star Trek : Lower decks. The new half-hour animated series focuses on the support crew serving on one of Starfleet's least important ships, the United States. Cerritos, in 2380.

SCAD Animation Studio presents: The Making of Bearly

Bearly is the first film to be made by SCAD Animation Studios, a recent student-run animation studio. Each year, a film is created and produced in a year-long collaboration with students in professional roles including lead animator, producer, visual development artist, story artist, 2D and 3D animators, lighters, composers and more – all positions that the Industry reflect roles that they will soon occupy. Join the SCAD Chair of Animation, Chris Gallagher, and some of the films will reveal more about the making of Bearly, a musical film about a bear battling the natural instincts of hibernation to explore the world and see beauty to discover the changing seasons.

Panel discussion: The women of animation

As the industry continues to move away from the traditionally male-dominated leadership model, more women than ever are making programming, manufacturing, and development decisions. Learn how the pursuit of equal representation across all creative and business departments has led to explosive success for cartoons and features, opening the door to future creatives to bring unique voices to storytelling.

A Retrospective: Celebrate the FX as you train your kite

In the 10 years since How to Train Your Dragon became a critical and box office hit for DreamWorks, there have been two additional films and a spin-off series. Join Jason Mayer (MFA Computer Art;), Head of FX for DreamWorks, along with SCAD alumni Steven Schweickart and Ashraf Ghoneim as they go behind the scenes at this award-winning franchise to discuss their work on the original film.

The SCAD leadership has researched and is working with leading technology platforms to provide all attendees with a multi-faceted and engaging virtual experience using a combination of Cinesend, Perigon and SquadUp. SCAD will stream the entire festival live and offer screenings via privacy-protected platforms.

  • Cinesend: A cloud-based distribution and streaming platform with the necessary piracy controls and integration for all digital streaming content.
  • Perigon: A virtual event platform that enables real-time content delivery with sophisticated functionality and execution.
  • SquadUp: A platform for mobile ticketing, event management and audience loyalty that enables mobile registration and integration with other platforms and apps.

The passes for the two-day festival can be purchased from September 15, 2020. The participants of the SCAD AnimationFest can register via a single gateway and purchase festival passes, which give them uniform access to all festival sessions across multiple devices. Each programming lesson will also have its own in-house producer to ensure the execution and interaction of streaming at the highest quality. Pass holders have the option to experience the festival on multiple devices and choose where and how they want to enjoy the content.
