Epic Games releases Twinmotion 2020.2

Tuesday, August 11, 2020 | Written by Jim Thacker

Epic Games has released Twinmotion 2020.2, the latest version of this Unreal Engine-based real-time visualization software that includes a range of new tools for creating architectural animation.

The update also improves the visual quality of the software's water and car paint materials, and adds new pre-made tree, construction vehicle, and airplane models.

A user-friendly tool for visualizing CAD data
Twinmotion was developed by the French visualization studio KA-RA to give architects with limited 3D experience the opportunity to create still images or animated visualizations of their buildings.

It imports hero models in a number of standard 3D file formats or via live links into CAD applications. Users can then create background environments from a library of inventory and assign lights.

The atmospheric properties – including clouds, rain, and snow, and ambient lighting based on geographic location and time of day – can be adjusted using sliders.

The software was acquired by Epic in 2019 and initially made available for free before being re-released commercially earlier this year at an aggressive new price.

New in Twinmotion 2020.2: decent parametric door system, new animation functions
Twinmotion 2020.2 expands the animation functions of the software by a number of functions with which users can create animations semi-automatically.

This includes a new system of interactive parametric doors: In addition to the automatic locking and scaling of openings in walls, the doors open automatically when characters or the scene camera move nearby.

Users can now also manually link each scene object to a rotation or translation widget to create simple animations such as opening or closing doors and windows.

In addition, the version contains a new, multi-lane phasing tool based on the time axis, with which the construction plan of a building can be animated or variant designs can be presented.

Improvements to water and car paint materials
The update also improves the visual quality of the water that Twinmotion generates: for bodies of water such as rivers and lakes as well as for puddles on hard surfaces.

The material used for the series vehicle models supplied with the software is given a clear coat to more closely mimic the behavior of the real car paint.

New 3D vehicle and vegetation models
New inventory includes a range of “smart airplanes” with customizable colors and airline logos. They react to the time of day and automatically turn on the light at night.

The release also adds 15 new East Asian tree species, each with four seasonal and three age states. and updates "several" of the existing construction vehicles.

Pricing and system requirements
Twinmotion is available for Windows 7+ and MacOS 10.13.6+. Integration plugins are available for ArchiCAD, SketchUp Pro, Revit, Rhino and RikCAD.

The update is free for registered users of Twinmotion 2020.1. New licenses have an MSRP of $ 499.
