Europe's biggest night of the award season took place practically outside of Berlin.
The European Film Awards, practically happening this year, announced their main winners in a ceremony on Saturday December 12th. The European Film Academy awarded prizes for handicrafts, short films and more during the week. The 33rd annual European film prizes this year were presented by the German television presenter Steven Gätjen from Berlin. Nominees and winners from around the world zoom into some technical difficulty.
With four nominations each, the European film winners “Another Round”, “Corpus Christi” and “Martin Eden” were in the lead. "Berlin Alexanderplatz", "The Painted Bird" and "Undine" were also nominated in the main category. This year the Academy increased the number of nominees for European film and European documentary from five to six. "Acasa, My Home", "Gunda", "Little Girl", "Saudi Runaway" and "The Cave" are nominated for documentaries, with "Collective" winning the award.
At the beginning of this week, the Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Holland was elected as the successor to Wim Wenders as the new President of the European Film Academy. Holland, also a candidate for the European director of “Charlatan”, was there to present prizes. "Phantom Thread" star Vicky Krieps presented Thomas Vinterberg with the European director's award for "Another Round". The film also received the Actor Award for leading actor Mads Mikkelsen and the script for Vinterberg and Tobias Lindholm. Paula Beer received the Actress Award for her appearance in Christian Petzold's "Undine".
Last year's grand prizes went to "The Favorite" for Best Picture, Actress for Olivia Colman, Director for Yorgos Lanthimos, and Comedy. Antonio Banderas won the actor's award for "Pain and Glory".
