A feast for the eyes: The 2020 V-Ray Showreel by the Chaos Group

Monday, November 2, 2020 | Written by Jim Thacker

Chaos Group has released their 2020 V-Ray Showreel: a three-minute compilation of the best new visual effects and animations made with the production renderer for 3ds Max, Maya, Cinema 4D, and Houdini.

Below we've selected some of the highlights with links to technical breakdowns of the projects.

Check out the VFX breakdowns of the best movies and TV series made with V-Ray
Although the reel spans a range of formats, the most recognizable moments are those from movies and TV series – as in previous years, many of them from Scanline VFX.

The studio regularly publishes breakdowns of its work on its Vimeo channel, e.g. B. the deconstruction of the energy effects of Captain Marvel and the liquid simulations of Spider-Man: Far From Home (embedded above).

Mackevision also appears regularly on V-Ray show reels, causing great technical breakdowns in his work, like this one for the second season of Netflix's Lost in Space.

And it's nice to see that the work of the Bulgarian effects studio Bottleship VFX – headquartered in the immediate vicinity of the Chaos Group itself – was presented again for its work on the Chinese science fiction epic Shanghai Fortress.

While the film itself may be less familiar to western audiences, the effects are spectacular: Bottleship's making-of video created our list of the 10 best VFX and animation breakdowns of 2019.

Fewer breakdowns for the featured commercials, but you can see the full projects online
From the shorthand work on the reel, Ixor VFX has one of the best brands in the form of this breakdown of its complex fluid simulation from an ad for Shell's Helix motor oil.

Unfortunately, we are not aware of any technical failures for the more stylized animations on the reel, but you can at least see the full projects on the Vimeo channels of the responsible studios.

Some of the most colorful come from the US studio Buck, the Amsterdam ambassadors and the Brazilian Vetor Zero.

And if you're wondering why there isn't any architectural visualization work – one of V-Ray's primary user groups – the Chaos Group has a separate Arch role, but it hasn't been updated this year.
