Gnomon Workshop released Introduction to Substance Painter 2020, a complete introduction to industry-standard texturing software recorded by Naughty Dog's lead technical artist Christophe Desse.

The workshop aims to move new users from zero to hero in less than four hours of video training and explain Desse's workflow for texturing models and characters on hard surfaces.

A detailed introduction to texturing hard surfaces and characters in Substance Painter
Desse starts the workshop with an introduction to the user interface and the most important tools of Substance Painter. In addition to the videos, viewers can also download the “Tike” robot model used for the introductory sections.

With the basics, Desse defines his texturing workflow for a complete project: a 3D scene with a racing car with drivers and a team of mechanics. All models are also available for download here.

Topics covered include material layers, texture sets, smart materials, projections, stencils, baking, anchor points, and how to weather and detail hard surfaces.

On the way, Desse also gives tips on how to use various materials and cards in Substance Painter.
