Master creating natural environments for visual effects

Monday, July 27, 2020 | Written by Jim Thacker

The Gnomon workshop has published Natural Environment Creation Techniques, a new workshop for creating extensive environments for projects with visual effects in Clarisse iFX, Houdini and Terragen.

The six-hour tutorial recorded by Independence Day: Resurgence Lighting TD Alessandro Cangelosi complements his previous tutorial on creating a detailed natural environment in Clarisse iFX.

Create detailed natural environments for VFX work in Terragen, Houdini and Clarisse iFX
During the workshop, Cangelosi uses a set of tools to create natural environments of the scale and complexity required for VFX work, using procedural workflows.

It starts in Terragen, the landscape generation tool from Planetside Software, with which software generates realistic clouds and backplates for image-based lighting are rendered.

Cangelosi then moves to Houdini to use the area masking system of the software to generate terrain and create rocks and mists that are exported in Alembic and VDB formats.

All assets are then imported along with the vegetation from Quixel's Megascans library into Clarisse iFX, Isotropix & # 39; tool layout for photography and lighting.

Cangelosi blocks the scene in Clarisse, creates a first lighting setup and then dresses the set with important tool sets such as particle painting, point clouds and scattering.

The workshop also examines how to create custom shaders for plants and terrain, and how to generate and apply color variations for instantiated assets with different levels of detail.

Cangelosi closes with the rendering of the scene, ready for the further development of the look in Fusion.
