Shocap entertainment, a leading entertainment and cross-reality production company, will unveil its virtual restoration of Vancouver's historic Palomar Supper Club as it streamed live by Jill Barber and her Phantom Jazz Band on Friday, November 20th. The performance, an impressive musical experience that combines virtual characters and XR technology, is intended to transport the audience back in time through the doors of a long-destroyed live music venue. The Closing Show, a unique take on a live streaming concert, mimics the intimacy of the 1930s jazz club by combining mixed reality with real performance and forming a band of virtual characters.

Founded as a partnership between Animatrik and Lifelike & Believable, Shocap produces live cross-reality entertainment using real-time visual effects technology and human performance on stage to create unique shared experiences that can be enjoyed simultaneously in front of a live audience and an online audience via VR Headsets are carried, gaming PCs and video streaming services.

The performance is created with green screens, motion capture suits and 50 motion capture cameras in Animatrik's ultra-modern Burnaby studio. The jazz singer Jill Barber appears in virtual space. The Shocap tool, RingMaster, integrates the various technologies into the final images created with Unreal Engine. Optitrack, Ncam Technologies and Nvidia were also important tools in the pipeline. The accompanying ghost band of CG musicians is projected in real time, with CG slow dancers appearing on the floor of the venue.

Athomas Goldberg, CEO of Shocap, said, “All the big, famous jazz acts of the day made it through there. You have Louis Armstrong, Billie Holliday, The Ink Spots, just a long list of who's who. We really want to give you a feel for what a club was like, with lots of references and tributes to the Palomar. "

Jazz singer Jill Barber added, “This is a whole new experience for me as a singer. Working with the talented Shocap and Animatrik team has changed my view of music performance. My fans can enjoy my songs from home and with friends during a unique live experience. It's incredible!"

"A live augmented reality jazz show with Jill Barber on the Animatrik stage," said Brett Ineson, Shocap executive director. "Great music combined with motion capture, unreal engine, camera tracking … everything that inspires us at once. The Shocap team has so much fun."
