In his ambitious new passion project, Uruguay-based Brazilian director / animator Chico Jofilsan uses several techniques to tackle one of the central dilemmas of all creative people: "How can you choose an idea from so many?"

Chico Jofilsan: “I wanted to do a personal project for a long time. A project where I could have total creative control. In the course of life, you get stuck in your everyday life between family and paying the bills, and a personal project is always a challenger.

I had four or five incomplete scripts for various short films and tried to figure out which one to continue with. It would be impossible to plan a production schedule because the film would have to be shot between customer jobs in my spare time.

“And of course I would have to face the problem of losing interest in doing something that may have to pause several times for up to six months.

“With this in mind, I chose this script, which enables multiple styles and techniques. I'm enthusiastic about too many things, so mixed media would help me in my constant search for different techniques and styles.

“Every time I was between two jobs, I tackled a scene. I thought this process would be a wise way not to lose interest in the long run.

“It felt good at first, but after a while I realized that every time I went back to my film I had to start over. Most scenes are not displayed more than once, and there are no predefined color palette or art direction styles.

“It was more work than a normal film that maintains the same visual language, the same characters and the same style. It was like a self-taught master class and also a way to measure the production timeframe of different styles for future projects.

“It took me two years to write the script and almost finish the film. Almost because now I had to find someone who would accept this crazy idea and work on the music.

“I was very lucky to work with Antfood. They had a very difficult challenge creating music that was supposed to change constantly and sometimes between really short scenes. They did it so well and smoothly that the music kept everything together. "
