Press release: Lightmap brings HDR Light Studio to Blender

The new real-time connectivity plug-in makes the powerful lighting toolkit used by leading design and automotive studios available to Blender users worldwide

September 8, 2020 – Today Lightmap released its new Blender connection for HDR Light Studio, bringing the artist-friendly real-time lighting toolkit to users of open source 3D design and rendering software. The plug-in creates a live connection between HDR Light Studio and Blender and helps automotive, visualization and entertainment artists to create precise, photo-realistic lighting configurations faster, more intuitively and more creatively.

HDR Light Studio allows artists to use time-saving features like LightPaint to create custom HDRI-based settings that mimic real-world lighting without the need to manually place 3D lights. With these features, users can position highlights on a model by simply clicking on its surface.

"The speed improvement that HDR Light Studio offers is huge," said motion designer Gizmo Beardon. “Moving light objects manually and changing settings in Blender takes time. It's nice to be able to just focus on the lighting. "

The new connection will make the lighting tools used in production by companies such as Porsche, Sony and Framestore available to individual Blender users for the first time.

"I found HDR Light Studio a long time ago and always wanted to use it for my blender projects," says automotive artist Daniel Vesterbaek, who recently added the new compound to his work. “The lighting used to feel awkward and there was a lot of guesswork about what reflections would look like. With HDR Light Studio, I can create higher quality light more intuitively. "

The Blender connection

The Blender connection is the first to leverage the new HDR Light Studio API (added in the Xenon Drop 1 version of HDR Light Studio) and is used to create a real-time connection between the two applications.

"We are very excited to launch this new add-on that connects HDR Light Studio with Blender," said Mark Segasby, Lightmap CEO and 3D product designer. “Thanks to our new API and the responsiveness of Blender itself, integration is incredibly fast. I found it a pleasure to learn and use Blender and its Cycles rendering engine. "

Blender renders will be lit with HDR Light Studio during beta testing

Key benefits of HDR Light Studio for Blender users include:

  • Interactively create photo-realistic HDRI-based lighting configurations
  • Drag and drop preset 2D and 3D lights that mimic real-world lights like softboxes
  • The LightPaint system positions highlights and reflections by clicking directly on a model
  • New Blender connection shows the results in real time in the Blender viewport
  • Create your own synthetic HDRIs or edit photographic HDRI maps
  • Customize HDRIs with masks, gradients, and layers
  • Procedural sky system for illuminating outdoor scenes
  • Save light rigs as presets for use in other projects
  • Fast and responsive, even with large production scenes
  • Supports industry standards such as OpenColorIO and Alembic
