News of the World Tenet Dominate VOD; The White Tiger Rises at Netflix

"The White Tiger," Ramin Bahrani's highly regarded adaptation of the acclaimed 2008 novel, has climbed to # 2 on the Netflix movie charts every day.

Little has changed in the VOD charts this week. "News of the World" and "Tenet" were still # 1 on two of the charts we follow, although "News" was higher overall this week, ranking # 2 and 3 elsewhere. "Tenet" is in the bottom half of two lists.

"News" ranks # 1 on FandangoNow, leading six titles with premium awards. It's also the top title on Spectrum Channel ranked by transaction and topped the list on Amazon TV and Google Play. This suggests that Universal is having another hit with its strategy of showing in theaters three weeks before PVOD.

"Tenet," which opened in theaters in September, continues to generate sales of $ 5.99. "News", now on its fifth cinema weekend, was number 4 at the box office that weekend with a total of 9.6 million US dollars. (Netflix bought its international territories.) With a $ 38 million pre-commercial budget, the studio can make a decent profit.

Promising Young Woman, also in its second week on PVOD, was the only other PVOD title to make it onto all four charts. This low budget, which debuted at Sundance 2020, appears to be a hit. Word of mouth about the feminist vengeance of black comedy / drama could make it an extended stay, with some Oscar attention a potential bonus.

"The War With Grandpa" and Nate Parker's "American Skin" complete this week's titles, which were placed in all four charts. “The Croods: A New Age” (Universal) is still stable, still at PVOD prices, with a total of three placements.

Focus functions

"Our Friend" was standout among new movies this week. Casey Affleck, Dakota Johnson and Jason Segel are a fact-based drama about a family with cancer. Distributor Gravitas Ventures took the $ 19.99 risk despite having no studio support or a first theatrical release. (Limited editions of the day and date are available.) Tracks with similar profiles such as Born a Champion and Redemption Day are now on the market for $ 6.99.

"Skyfire" rounded off the debut at $ 9.99. This Chinese-made film with a multi-ethnic cast is a volcanic disaster story on a Pacific island. Directed by Simon West ("Con Air", "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider") it had a poor run in China when it opened at the end of 2019.

After weeks of original titles topping their movie charts, Netflix saw the drug war actioner “Homefront” from the small town in 2013 with Jason Statham at number 1. Much more impressive is the Netflix original at number 2: the Indian set “The White Tiger”: Dem Potential Oscar contenders lack stars familiar to American audiences, but rave reviews and word of mouth seem to add to its appeal.
