Soho VFX studio One of Us announced it was involved in the recent UK release of Matteo Garrone's Pinocchio. Featuring some of the finest and most ambitious work in the studio's 15-year history, the film is based on the original 19th century story by Carlo Collodi and based on the illustrations by Carlo Chiostri.

The studio delivered over 200 recordings, nearly half an hour of screen time, and won the David di Donatello Prize for VFX earlier this year.

Garrone & # 39; s is a world in which animals are depicted with little more than makeup (a fox, a cat) alongside fully digital creatures (donkey, dogfish, woodpeckers) and prosthetic digital hybrids (tuna, snail, cricket) .

The company was involved in the project from pre-production and initially tested approaches to depicting Pinocchio himself, working with makeup and prosthesis magician Mark Coulier to ensure that digital work matches and complements digital work . the wealth of the world that Garrone built.

Through pre-production and a three-month shoot in Tuscany, Puglia and Rome, One Of Us VFX supervisor Theo Demiris built a relationship of trust with Garrone, developed an understanding of his aesthetic intentions, and planned the best route through a short post period.

"The work presented both technical and artistic challenges, including a 40-second shot of a drowning donkey surrounded by a shimmering school of fish and the wounding of the whale swallowing Pinocchio, with all the chaotic water interaction that goes with it is "Demiris commented on the complexity of the VFX.

"We must also mention the iconic sequence in which the young doll's nose grows in response to his lies and is loosened by the arrival of a small flock of woodpeckers," added Demiris. "These and many other complex shots had to fit into the unique world Garrone had created, and much of it was achieved through an ongoing dialogue between One Of Us, the director, and its concept artist and character designer, Pietro Scola."

"We are very proud of what Theo and his team have created," noted Rachael Penfold, one of the managing directors of One of Us. "And we are happy to be part of this beautiful and beguiling fairy tale."

Pinocchio is currently showing in cinemas across the UK.
