Hornet director Peter Sluszka leads his stop-motion team into a surreal and emotional world of handmade miracles to highlight the importance of imagination as a motivational force in incurable diseases.
The work follows Yves Geleyn's short film “Planimation”, which was also produced by Hornet via the Area 23 agency for Eli Lilly.
Peter Sluszka: “It's rare that you get a story with such a personal bond between two characters while jumping between so many media. Visually it is very rich.
“The handcrafted aspect was always in front and in the middle. For example, all of the characters' clothing was bespoke, nothing bought in the store, and handmade. This design decision determined the overall look.
“Traditional sculptors shaped the body features, 3D modelers created 45 different facial steps, and painters then painted each of those 3D printed faces very precisely.
"All of this for the characters only – don't think about the other aspects of the film, like having a rigging team to create a camera system to move the water (which was made of cloth), or the 2D papercraft Kite flying department or the trained weavers to construct the opera house scene in a complicated way. "
