MSI announced the availability of its new Creator 15 laptop. It has the 10th generation Intel Core i7-10875H processor and NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPU options. Users can choose either a full HD touchscreen display (first touchscreen in the Creator series) or a 4K panel. The laptop is available to pre-order now, starting at $ 1,599.

While large desktop computers usually offer a better editing experience (better ergonomics and more processing power with better cooling), laptops are essential for working on the go. If you're a macOS user, choosing one probably won't be that difficult – MacBook Pro 16 "is configured to fit the budget.

There are many options for us Windows users. In May 2020, for example, Dell introduced its new flagship laptops for developers – the XPS 15 and 17 models. MSI is now launching the Creator 15 laptop. Let's take a look at the features and specifications.

MSI Creator 15

MSI aimed this laptop at creators (filmmakers, photographers, graphic designers, etc.) – hence the name. The technical data also reflect this, of course. MSI chose the latest Intel Core i7-10875H series 10th generation processor (8 core, up to 5.1 GHz) to power the laptop.

The GPU is provided by NVIDIA. Depending on the configuration, the laptop starts with the GeForce GTX 1660Ti and extends to the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER Max-Q. The RTX 2060 and RTX 2070 models are of course also available.

The laptop's motherboard contains the HM470 chipset with two DDR4-3200 memory slots. It appears that MSI will sell configurations with either 16GB or 32GB of memory, but it will be possible to equip a maximum of 64GB. MSI Creator 15 offers two M.2 SSD slots for storage.

The MSI Creator 15 screen includes Delta-E <2 color accuracy and MSI's True Color technology for accurate color display. According to MSI, Calman reviews its screens to ensure the best display performance. When it comes to selecting a screen, MSI offers three options with the new Creator 15:

  • 15.6-inch 4K UHD (3840 × 2160), 100% Adobe RGB color gamut, thin bezel
  • 15.6-inch full HD touchscreen (1920 × 1080) with almost 100% sRGB and a thin bezel display at IPS level
  • 15.6-inch full HD screen (1920 × 1080), almost 100% sRGB, IPS-level display with a thin faceplate

What I find interesting about the Creator 15 is the rather large 99.9 Wh battery. According to MSI, the battery life should be up to 9 hours. What also sounds good is the included Thunderbolt 3 port, which users can use to charge the laptop with a power bank.

Further connections are a USB type A and a USB type C connection (both USB3.2 Gen2), an HDMI connection ((e-mail protected)), an RJ45 LAN connection and a MIC -In / Headphone-Out combo jack. There's also an over-screen HD webcam with face recognition. In addition, there is a fingerprint login, a glass touchpad, two speakers and a full-size SD card reader.

Cooling is usually a problem with laptops. For example, Dell decided to use the XPS 17's vapor chamber to combat the heat. MSI claims that Creator 15 has MSI's exclusive Cooler Boost technology with 0.1mm fan blades to maximize airflow and keep the system cool for better CPU performance. I'm curious to see how this will hold up in tests.

The laptop has a solid aluminum body and a sandblasted, carbon gray surface. The dimensions of the laptop are 358.3 x 248 x 18.3-19.8 mm (14.11 "x 9.76" x 0.72 ") and its weight is 2.1 kg (4.63 lbs). Creator 15 also offers a 180 ° lay-flat hinge design and a flip-n-share function for easier collaboration.

Price and availability

MSI Creator 15 laptops are now available for pre-order. As mentioned above, the basic configuration starts at $ 1,599.
