The Gotham Awards – the IFP's long-running event where the organization's name change to The Gotham Film & Media Institute was officially announced tonight – has long held pole position at this year's film awards, followed by the SAG Awards, the Spirit Awards and of course the Oscars. So also in this completely different year, in which live events are excluded due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Today's event was broadcast live from the Gotham's usual location – Cipriani Wall Street. The Gotham executive director Jeff Sharp led ceremonies with some presenters walking the red carpet and speaking from the room while most of the others beamed in from home. The live tables were replaced virtually, as participants could chat with one another while the show ran side by side on a split screen. As with everything this year, it was an experiment that other organizations would repeat in the coming months. But the Gothams maintained their unpredictability – there were several surprises with the awards – as well as some very moving moments, like the tribute to Chadwick Boseman. The late actor's award was accepted by his wife Taylor Simone Ledward, who said: "He used the power to let go and let God's love shine through."

Other honors went to Ryan Murphy, Steve McQueen, Viola Davis and the ensemble of The Trial of the Chicago 7.

Chloe Zhao's Nomadland received both Best Feature and Audience Awards, while the Best Documentary category was split between two films: Garrett Bradley's Time and Ramona S. Diaz & # 39; A Thousand Edits. Riz Ahmed was named Best Actor for Sound of Metal and Nicole Beharie named Best Actress for Miss Juneteenth. The Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director Award went to Andrew Patterson for The Vast of Night.
