CDA-Tek, the Irish company behind the PBC Pocket Cinema Camera Controller, has just released an update on its Bluetooth controller for the BMPCC 4K / 6K. This update is about the AFX Focus Controller, which works in conjunction with the PBC controller and adds autofocus functions to popular Blackmagic cameras. Let's take a closer look!

PBC Pocket Cinema Camera Controller

Last year we reported on the crowdfunding campaign CDA-Tek PBC Pocket Cinema Camera Controller. In short, the Pocket Cinema Controller is a bluetooth controller designed for 4K / 6K users of the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera.

The tiny device has a built-in battery with a battery life of five hours, a small display with information about the camera settings and two buttons for adjusting your parameters. With the two buttons you can change the aperture, ISO, white balance, autofocus, automatic exposure and start-stop of recording.

Unfortunately, the crowdfunding campaign was unsuccessful, but the CDA-Tek team continued to work hard to further improve their product.

AFX focus controller

The AFX Focus Controller is an add-on module that works together with the PBC Pocket Cinema Camera Controller.

The AFX module comes with a handheld controller and enables manual control of the focus of electronic lenses (MFT or EF lenses) on your BMPCC 4K / 6K. You can also use it in single or continuous auto focus mode.

The autofocus on the AFX module works thanks to a LIDAR laser detection and range finder sensor in the device. This sensor monitors the distance from the camera to the next object and adjusts the focus accordingly.

In the video example above, single focus and continuous focus seem to work well for subjects with a medium frame. However, focus changes are very quick and abrupt, but according to CDA-Tek, selectable hold and ramp times are available in AF-C mode. The sample clips in the video are intended to illustrate the speed at which targets can be locked and re-captured. "

Price and availability

The Pocket Cinema Camera Controller is already available at Indiegogo for € 74.00. Please remember that Kickstarter is not a retail store, it is a crowdfunding platform. Therefore, there are risks associated with buying through Kickstarter.

The additional AFX module can be pre-ordered next month for € 199.00. For more information, please visit CDA-Tek's website here.

What do you think of the CDA-Tek AFX module? Do you frequently use autofocus on your BMPCC 4K / 6K? Don't hesitate to let us know in the comments section!
