Pixologic's livestream announces ZBrushCore 2021. See ZRemesher, its new automated retopology system, and MicroPoly, its tissue mimicking toolset, on record as of 00:59:00.
Pixologic has released ZBrushCore 2021, the latest version of its reduced edition of ZBrush aimed at hobbyists, students, 3D printing enthusiasts and illustrators.
The update – again free of charge for existing users – adds ZRemesher, the automated retopology system and dynamic retopology from ZBrush, as well as the MicroPoly system for imitating fabrics from ZBrush 2021.
A stripped-down version of ZBrush for less demanding jobs
First released in 2016, ZBrushCore is a scaled-down version of Pixologic's digital sculpting software.
Users get 36 of the roughly 300 ZBrush modeling brushes, plus support for InsertMultiMesh and basic rendering options, either through BPR or a separate paid add-on for KeyShot.
The options for painting, masking, or polygrouping models are also basic. ZBrush's toolsets for modeling hard surfaces and Live Booleans are not supported. The network resolution is limited to 20 million polygons.
In addition, scripts, plugins and macros are deactivated.
New in ZBrushCore 2021: automatically retopologize high-resolution sculptures with ZRemesher
In addition, ZBrushCore 2021 will add another important function from the full version of ZBrush: ZRemesher.
The retopology system converts high resolution sculpts into meshes with a lower poly base with clean topology and edge flow, making it easier to use models created in ZBrushCore for games or animation.
In ZBrushCore, the retopology seems to be a purely automated process than in ZBrush itself.
The documentation describes the ZBrushCore version of ZRemesher as having "basic" functionality and notes that there are "not all options" of ZBrush to refine the results.
Support for dynamic subdivision and native Sculptris scene files
The 2021 update also expands ZBrushCore with the Dynamic Subdivision System from ZBrush.
In contrast to the existing classic subdivision mode, it is mainly used for roughing basic meshes and offers an interactive real-time preview of what higher subdivision levels will look like.
In addition, Sculptris Pro – the dynamic tessellation system added in ZBrushCore 2020 – has been updated to allow users to import files originally created in Sculptris, the free application on which it is based.
Sculptris himself has now been discontinued. The old product website has been redirected to ZBrushCoreMini, the new free version of ZBrush from Pixologic, which also includes the dynamic tessellation system.
The new MicroPoly system reproduces the weave structures of real fabrics
ZBrushCore users also get some features from ZBrush 2021, last month's update to the full version.
While this doesn't include the biggest changes from ZBrush 2021 – the brushes for fabric shaping and the toolset for soft body dynamics – ZBrushCore users get the new MicroPoly system.
It replaces every polygon in a mesh with instantiated geometry and provides a quick way to recreate the weave of fabric or chain mail. Presets for real fabrics like canvas and denim are also provided.
ZBrushCore now also supports the new iMage3D PNG and GIF export formats, which encode the information required to restore a ZBrush model to a 2D image.
Users can take 2D snapshots of a sculpture, share them online, and have other users open them in ZBrushCore and continue sculpting the mesh while retaining all of the original SubTools.
Prices and availability
ZBrushCore 2021 is available for 64-bit Windows 7+ and 64-bit Mac OS X 10.10+. Perpetual licenses are priced at $ 179.95. The rent is $ 9.95 / month. The update is free for existing users.
