The Rookies 2020 ranking shows the best CG schools in the world

International Student Awards Program The Rookies have announced the 2020 Rookies World School Rankings, the tenth annual list of the world's best CG schools that rates over 500 schools in 88 countries.
The gnomon from the USA topped the overall list of the world's best schools for creative media and entertainment arts and took first place in the ranking of visual effects for the fourth year in a row.
Gnomon also took second place in the 3D animation category and lost to his colleague Ringling from the USA.
Other important winners in the category are the Canadian Syn Studio for conceptual art and the Think Tank Training Center for game design, as well as the Danish 3D College for architectural visualization.
One of the world's most comprehensive ranking programs for CG schools
Since its inception in 2009, The Rookies – formerly known as the CG Student Awards – has grown into one of the world's largest and most prestigious award programs for young CG artists.
The 2020 Awards were submitted by 3,769 students worldwide, up 6% over the previous year.
The student portfolios were judged by a panel of 130 judges who worked primarily with VFX, game and conceptual artists.
Individual contributions were evaluated using a range of creative and technical criteria, with employment potential being the most weighted and a median calculated for each school.
Additional bonus points were awarded to every student in a school who reached the list of finalists for a category.
As with any subjective ranking, individual results can be discussed, and a school’s results are obviously influenced by the degree to which it encourages its students to sign up for the awards.
However, the rookies rating system is transparent, consistent from year to year and based on a large pool of data. This makes the ranking the best guide we know about the quality of schools worldwide.
An asterisk indicates that the school again took first place in 2019.
Individual categories show the world's best VFX, animation and game design schools
There were relatively few changes in the individual disciplines between the 2019 and 2020 rankings: Gnomon retains its top position for VFX, the Think Tank Training Center for game design and the 3D College for Arch Viz.
While animation has now been broken down into separate categories for 2D and 3D animation, last year's highest ranked school, SVA, takes first place in the list of 2D animations.
The only change was in the conceptual art category. Last year's top ranked school, The One Academy, was relegated to the post by Syn Studio this year.
In addition, the “Production Excellence” categories introduced last year, based on the performance of the group projects created at a school rather than on individual students, were repeated.
Not all of them reach a full 10 schools count, but you can see the results in the VFX and Animation, Game Design Categories, and for Game Design categories on the Rookies website.
Gnomon was voted the best CG school in the world overall
The rookies have now also introduced a new category for the world's best overall creative media and entertainment school, which was again won by Gnomon this year.
Obviously, larger schools with a wide range of training courses have an advantage over smaller colleges, and some well-known schools are lacking. In addition, there are no characteristics in either China or Japan.
However, the list seems like a pretty good guide to the best CG schools in the world – 50 of the best, if not the final 50 – including facilities in 18 countries in Asia, Europe, and North America.
