Check out the speakers for the VIEW Conference 2020
Monday, September 7, 2020 | Written by Jim Thacker
The Italian VIEW Conference has started announcing speakers for this year's event, including a keynote from Pixar co-founder Ed Catmull and sessions with the directors of many of the world's greatest animated features.
The conference – one of the few CG industry events to be held both physically and online this year – also features talks from Game of Thrones VFX supervisor Stefen Fangmeier and VFX legend Phil Tippett.
A who's who of the world of feature animation
VIEW is now in its 21st year one of the leading CG festivals in Europe. It offers a five-day program with lectures, workshops and film screenings as well as its own animation prizes, the VIEW Award.
If the coronavirus restrictions allow, this will be one of the few CG industry events to take place physically in 2020, although there is also a new online component – more on that later.
The keynote speech for the 2020 conference comes from Ed Catmull, co-founder of Pixar and former President of Walt Disney Animation Studios, while the speakers are a real who's who of the world of animation.
Previously confirmed directors include Spider-Man: In The Spider-Verse Peter Ramsey, Kris Pearn of The Willoughbys, and Tomm Moore, writer and director of the Oscar-nominated Song of the Sea.
The conference should also give a sneak peek into two of next year's key animated features, with sessions from Joel Crawford, director of The Croods 2, and Kyle Balda, director of Minions: The Rise of Gru.
On the business side of the industry, Moana producer Osnat Shurer will speak about her career and current work as a producer on Disney's upcoming cartoon Raya and The Last Dragon.
Lectures on VFX and game development as well as practical workshops and master classes
Outside of the feature animation, Stefen Fangmeier, VFX supervisor for the epic final season of Game of Thrones, is the final speaker confirmed for the 2020 conference.
He is accompanied by his former ILM colleagues Roger Guyett, VFX supervisor for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and Hal Hickel, animation supervisor for The Mandalorian, and VFX industry legend Phil Tippett.
Speakers from the game industry include Nate Fox, Creative Director of Sucker Punch Productions for Ghost of Tsushima, EA founder Trip Hawkins and Milan Jovovic, co-founder of mobile developer Nordeus.
The event will also feature a series of panel discussions and masterclasses, while Jeremy Clapin, director of the critically acclaimed and Oscar-nominated I Lost My Body, will host a workshop on his experience transitioning from animated shorts to full-length shorts for Properties.
The listing will be confirmed shortly. Please visit the conference website for more information.
Free online PreVIEW sessions with the conference keynote speakers
However, if you can't make it to Turin in person, the conference organizers are also hosting a series of free PreVIEW sessions with keynote speakers in the run-up to the live event.
Those featured so far include Peter Ramsey, Sharon Calahan and Bill Reeves from Pixar, as well as Rob Bredow, CTO of Lucasfilm and Head of ILM. Follow the VIEW conference on Twitter for details on upcoming meetings.
