Tilta announced a new rig / cage for the RED Komodo 6K Super35 camera. The rig contains an upper plate and a cage with multiple mounting threads, cold shoes and rosettes. Tilta will also offer several handles and power modules. Starting at $ 129, the rigs will be available in August 2020 as pre-configured kits and as separate components.
The RED Komodo 6K Super35 cinema camera is approaching the official production version (here is our last update article about the camera). While Jarred Land and the entire RED Digital Cinema team are working on the completion, testing and shipping of the white “Stormtrooper” version (RED's traditional last pre-production color) of the camera, third party manufacturers are still announcing accessories for Komodo.
We saw SmallHD shipped with a special Komodo-optimized monitor last week. This time we're taking a look at Tilta's announcement – a new camera cage / rig for RED Komodo, including Power Module options.
Tilta camera rig for RED Komodo
In my opinion, Tilta's cage for RED Komodo contains many interesting design solutions. The company designed the top plate, the retractable side cage, the base plates, a variety of handles, and power supply solutions. Two colors will be available – classic black and tactical style (dark "worn" gray). The full cage weighs 279 g. The dimensions of the cage are (LxWxH) 138 x 123.8 x 115.5 mm.
There are several 3/8 "and 1/4" threads and rosette attachment points on the sides of the slide-in cage. Unfortunately, it seems that the rosette is not an ARRI standard – Tilta says it is a custom Komodo rosette design.
The top plate adds two 1/4 "threads with positioning pins and a cold shoe with another 1/4" thread.
On the bottom of the camera is a multifunctional adapter plate with a standard 15 mm dovetail slot and built-in 3/8 "and 1/4" screw slots.
Tilta announced the new lightweight 15 mm base plate from LWS, which offers 15 mm rod support and is compatible with Manfrotto and Arca quick release plates. The base plate also contains a mini safety pin to prevent the camera from slipping out if it is not tightened properly.
Perhaps the most interesting design feature (at least for me) is that flexible upper handle This is adjustable to work at different angles. There is a button quick release system (as we know it from the SHAPE extension rod), which is mounted at an angle of 45 °. When the button is pressed, the handle can rotate freely and therefore functions either as an upper handle or as a side handle. The handle remains securely in place when released.
In addition, the handle can be moved back and forth after loosening two 1/4 inch screws. There is also a cold shoe and a 15 mm rod holder on the arm of the handle. On the handle itself there are two cold shoe slits with safety pins on both ends.
In addition to the 45 ° flexible handle, Tilta also offers one 90 ° top handle. It is mounted on the cold shoe on top of the camera and fastened with a 1/4 "screw. A button quick release system is also used. When pressed, the handle can rotate freely to keep the top screen of the Komodo free.
Tilta will also offer a variety of adjustable multi-angle side handles. Start with a simple wooden side handle, over the focus handle (for nucleus, follow focus control) and the power handle (for nucleus control and powering).
Tilta power modules
It appears that Tilta will offer two Power Module options for the RED Komodo. Both convert the two Canon BP battery compartments into a V-mount slot and add multiple ports.
The first Power module With this option, the V-mounting plate is turned sideways so that the batteries have to be mounted from the side. It weighs 205 g and adds the following connectors:
- 5V USB output
- Two 14.8 V D tap connections
- Two 14.8 V 2-pin Lemo ports
Tiltas Extended power distribution module is a more sophisticated power supply solution. The V-mount plate can be mounted either laterally or in an upright position for larger V-mount batteries. The module adds further ports:
- Run / stop port
- Timecode port
- Control connection
- Genlock port
- 5V USB output
- 14.8 V D-tap connection
- 14.8 V 2-pin Lemo connection
