This week we looked at Polycam, a cute iOS app that turns new iPad pros into real-time LIDAR scanners.
That reminded us that computer vision and augmented reality specialist Laan Labs released a similar free app earlier this year, but we haven't covered it at this point.
Capture structured 3D scans of objects or surroundings on your iPad Pro
The Laan Labs tool, simply referred to as the "3D scanner app," also uses the lidar sensor in the latest iPad pros to create structured 3D scans of large objects or entire environments when the user is around them going around.
As with Polycam, the processing is done on the iPad itself, so you don't need an active internet connection.
The resulting 3D model can be released in USDZ format via the iMessage app from Apple for display in the Quick Look. or exported to other DCC applications in OBJ, glTF, STL and Collada (DAE) formats.
Unlike Polycam, you don't have to buy a Pro version to export models: the app is completely free.
Pricing and system requirements
The Laan Labs 3D scanner app is available free of charge for iOS 13.6+. You need an iPad with a LIDAR sensor to use it. That currently means a 2020 iPad Pro.
