To celebrate its 21st anniversary, the VIEW Conference 2020, Italy's leading conference for digital media, presented both live and online, will be available free of charge upon registration. For a full week, the conference brings together no less than 160 world-class filmmakers, producers, studio managers, animators, artists, game developers, musicians, journalists and educators, and features 125 online and on-site lectures, workshops, master classes and panels. The conference will be keyed by Ed Catmull, co-founder of Pixar and past president of Pixar and Disney Animation Studios. A true visionary of computer graphics, Catmull pioneered fundamentals such as texture mapping, bicubic patches, and spatial anti-aliasing. He is the author of the book "Creativity, Inc .: Overcoming the Invisible Forces That Stand in the Way of True Inspiration," which is described as "The First All-Access Journey into Pixar's Nerve Center".
Headliners are also two real legends from the world of visual effects: nine-time Oscar winner Dennis Muren, Creative Director at Industrial Light & Magic; and Phil Tippett, director, producer, visual effects supervisor, founder of Tippett Studio and winner of two Academy Awards. Muren achieved groundbreaking work on films such as The Abyss and Jurassic Park at the beginning of the digital revolution. Tippett and ILM developed the revolutionary go-motion technology, which combines stop-motion animation with motion control technology. During their long and respected careers, both have continued to advance the art and science of visual effects.
In addition, Paul Debevec, Senior Engineer at GoogleVR, will give a keynote at the start of the VIEW 2020 Business Innovation Summit. This carefully curated series of presentations and workshops takes place as part of the main conference and not only provides insight into the creative process behind the latest movies, games and experiences, but also the synergy between that creativity and the industries it serves.
"Our keynotes bring such an extraordinary depth of talent and experience to the conference," says Dr. Gutierrez. “They are just the beginning, however. This year I am particularly proud of the variety of topics and speakers. For example, 43 of our speakers are women, including studio heads, animated film directors, producers, visual effects artists and game developers. We have a number of cutting-edge lectures and panels that cover the challenges of manufacturing during the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as others that cover the latest production tools and techniques – including a virtual production panel with Jay Worth from Westworld , Sam Nicholson from Stargate Studios and Habib Zargarpour from Unity. We have panels on storytelling, lighting, women in virtual production … the list goes on! "
The VIEW 2020 lineup includes more than 30 studio heads and chief creative officers. Mireille Soria, President of Paramount Animation, joins a Women in the Animation Industry panel with Osnat Shurer of Disney, producer of Raya and The Last Dragon and Moana, and Maureen Fan, co-founder and CEO of Baobab Studios. A panel on diversity and inclusion in animation features Ramsey Naito, President of Nickelodeon Animation, who will also host a special Nickelodeon session showcasing the work of Miguel Puga (The Casagrandes) and Niki Lopez (Santiago of the Seas). Meanwhile, Rob Bredow, head of ILM, is looking at nothing less than the future of entertainment itself.
VIEW 2020 also brings together 30 animation, short, and cartoon series directors including Kris Pearn (The Willoughbys), Sergio Pablos (Klaus), Kyle Balda (Minions) and Peter Ramsey (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-). Vers), Walt Dohrn (Trolls World Tour), Joel Crawford (The Croods), Conrad Vernon (The Addams Family), Eric Darnell (Madagascar) and Jeff Rowe (Nickelodeon's upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles). In a special panel, directors Jorge R. Gutierrez (The Book of Life), Tony Bancroft (Animal Crackers) and Cartoon Saloon co-founder Tomm Moore (Wolfwalkers co-director with Ross Stewart) will discuss the future of cinema.
The upcoming animated feature Soul by Disney and Pixar receives the all-star treatment of the VIEW conference in a special presentation in which animation supervisor Bobby Podesta, senior technical lighting director Max Bickley and technical director Markus Kranzler talk about their artistic and technical approaches to creating the world of “The Great Before”, where souls acquire their personality before they come to earth.
A deeper insight into the jam-packed VIEW 2020 program shows first-class specialists at every turn. Representative visual effects are Roger Guyett (Star Wars) from ILM, Hal Hickel (The Mandalorian), Stefen Fangmeier (Game of Thrones), Anders Langlands (Mulan) from Weta Digital, Jay Worth (Westworld) and Tim Webber (Gravity), Creative Director of Framestore. Ron Martin and Sébastien Deguy of Unity, Vice President for 3D and Immersive at Adobe, share their expertise in the areas of AR / VR / XR and real-time media. At Baobab Studios, Kane Lee, Content Director, and Larry Cutler, CTO, will discuss the creation of their latest VR project, Baba Yaga. The conference attendees would like to meet the legendary Cornell Professor Dr. Don't miss Donald Greenberg in conversation with Eloi Champagne, Technical Director for VR at the National Film Board of Canada. Creative consultants Rafi Nizam and Pixars Dylan Sisson are also present to share their insights.
Game developers and artists are equally well represented in a variety of workshops, master classes, and sessions. Topics include the art of storytelling with Nikola Damjanov from Nordeus, who, along with concept artist Sébastien Hue and Art Director of Respawn, Todd Sue, will conduct a panel on game art – art direction with Jan-Bart Van Beek from Guerilla Games and the creation of a game studio with Nordeus co-founder Milan Jovovic. Naughty Dog Art Directors John Sweeney and Erick Pangilinan lift the lid on this year's action adventure game The Last of Us Part II.
Pixar's co-founder, Dr. Alvy Ray Smith, will preview his groundbreaking book The Biography of the Pixel, slated for Spring 2021, while Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial artist Ann Telnaes will present her work on The Washington Post.
Just before the conference starts, viewers can enjoy a special PreVIEW workshop with Tony Bancroft, where the Annie Award-winning animator and co-director of Animal Crackers teaches the cartoon characters craft.
