The new Vaxis ATOM 500 SDI has just been released. It is similar to the original Vaxis ATOM 500, but offers SDI connectivity. The image transmission is possible up to 1080p 60fps up to a distance of 500 & # 39; line of sight with a delay of 80ms. The devices can be powered by a USB-C port or NPF batteries.

The Chinese company Vaxis introduced the affordable ATOM 500 wireless video transmission system back in January 2020. The original Vaxis ATOM 500 only offered an HDMI connection, so the company decided to add SDI connectivity as well. Say hello to the new Vaxis ATOM 500 SDI.

Vaxis ATOM 500 SDI

As the name suggests, the Vaxis ATOM 500 SDI has a maximum range of approx. 152 m. According to Vaxis, the system has a latency of less than 80 ms (0.08 s). In the case of a 60 fps signal, this can be a delay of approximately up to four frames. In an environment with interference, the range decreases and the delay can be up to 120 ms (0.12 s, up to seven frames with 60 fps signal).

Both the transmitter (TX) and the receiver (RX) now offer HDMI and SDI connectivity with an integrated signal cross & converter. Vaxis didn't state this, but I assume it's a 3G-SDI as it only supports up to FHD resolution. The body size and weight are identical for the TX and RX – 113 x 63.5 x 20 mm, 170 g per unit. The units are gray, but there are five custom skins to choose from.

Vaxis ATOM 500 SDI formats

Vaxis Atom 500 SDI can transmit video signals at up to 1080p 60fps.

The following video formats are available for HDMI:

For the power supply, the Vaxis ATOM 500 SDI accepts 5 V DC (power consumption less than 6.5 W). It can be powered either via the USB-C port or the built-in NPF battery bay. Vaxis claims to have redesigned the battery slot. There is now a spring loaded stainless steel clip that holds the battery in place and prevents it from accidentally falling.

Just like the original Vaxis ATOM 500, the antenna is internal. The device supports 13 channels and passcode protection. Both TX and RX have an OLED display for setting and status checking. According to Vaxis, the audio and video are 100% synchronized with this system. There is a picture for / latency switch to choose between image quality and latency.

The new Vaxis ATOM 500 SDI supports monitoring via the Vaxis Vision App. The device can display the QR code for easier phone connection. Currently the app is only available for iOS, the Android version will be available soon, according to Vaxis.

Price and availability

The Vaxis ATOM 500 SDI is $ 459 and shipping should begin soon (see the links to B&H and CVP below).

The original Vaxis ATOM 500 kit with an HDMI connector is currently priced at $ 399. We see retailers starting a clearing sale. The SDI version (which also has HDMI) will likely replace it.

What do you think of the new Vaxis ATOM 500 SDI? Do you have experience with the original Vaxis ATOM 500? Which brand do you prefer for wireless video transmission?
