The Project Dogwaffle team releases Howler 2021.1

Wednesday, September 23, 2020 | Written by Jim Thacker

The creators of the hard-to-class digital painting, animation, and video processing tool Howler have released Howler 2021, the latest version of the software.

The update allows for much larger brushes to be created, makes the user interface more tablet-friendly, and improves support for multi-monitor setups.

A quirky, low-cost natural media color package with many unexpected features
Howler – originally Project Dogwaffle – was originally released two decades ago and is an idiosyncratic tool for digitally painting and creating content under $ 100.

Its core competency is natural media painting, but it offers a number of unexpected features ranging from terrain generation to particle shaping to video repair and rotoscopy.

New in Howler 2021: Support for larger brushes, better workflow on tablets and multi-monitor setups
Howler 2021 isn't such a radical update, although that may not be surprising as it comes only two months after the previous version as developer Dan Ritchie switched to a system of incremental versions.

The changes are primarily workflow improvements, including the option to create much larger brushes, with the airbrush and AA pen sizes now set in relative units rather than absolute pixel values.

Users also get new options for rotating and rotating custom brushes.

The size and opacity sliders have been redesigned to make them more "tablet-friendly". Multiple monitor support has been improved and the software now automatically remembers the last monitor used.

Updated September 23, 2020: Howler 2021.1 is out. The update optimizes the user interface of Puppyray, the renderer integrated in the software, and offers the option to save settings and keyframes for Puppyray projects.

In addition, the Eyedropper can now pick both screen colors and colors from document layers. For a full list of changes, please visit the link below.

Prices and availability
Howler 2021.1 is only available for Windows. It has an MSRP of $ 76.99, although the software is usually available at a discount.
