Take a few minutes to see a new feature, Epic Filmmaking, just released by Disney that takes us through some behind-the-scenes moments at Mulan, the live-action remake of their 1998 animated feature. Mulan is directed by Niki Caro and plays Yifei Liu in the title role of a woman who has to dress up as a man to keep her older father from serving in the military. The film is one of many who had to cancel their planned theatrical release due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, it will be released as a premium purchase for Disney + starting September 4th.
In the film, Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honored warrior, enters when the Emperor of China issues a decree requiring one man per family to serve in the imperial army to defend the country from invaders from the sick father. Masked as a man, Hua Jun, she is put to the test every step of the way and must use her inner strength and use her true potential. It is an epic journey that will transform her into an honored warrior and earn her the respect of a grateful nation and a proud father.
Mulan features a famous international cast that includes Liu as Mulan. Donnie Yen as Commander Tung; Tzi Ma as Zhou, Jason Scott Lee as Böri Khan; Yoson An as Honghui; Ron Yuan as Sergeant Qiang; with Gong Li as Xianniang and Jet Li as emperor. The film is being directed by Caro from a script by Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver and Lauren Hynek & Elizabeth Martin, suggested by the narrative poem "The Ballad of Mulan". Chris Bender, Jake Weiner and Jason Reed are serving as producers, and Bill Kong, Barrie M. Osborne, Tim Coddington and Mario Iscovich are executive producers.
