With nothing in production and resistance to online publishing, Netflix faces a heavy blow to film studios and streamers.
Looking back at 2020, we will call it a lost year for many of us. The work stopped, times were very hard and we lost people we knew and loved. Hollywood really was the year without films.
At this point, you have to assume that the rest of 2020 will go to cinemas without large films … unless there is a miracle vaccine that can be mass-produced and sold until November.
Even in best case scenarios, this appears to be more of an option for January 2021.
So does anyone benefit from the scenario?
Sure, on the surface, Netflix wins simply because we're all at home and streaming things. That is a given. But when it comes to streaming wars, it will jump to the top of the class thanks to the foresight that no other company had.
Netflix has collected original content in the past 5 years. It made a name for itself by giving filmmakers the final cut and bringing out a variety of content for every possible population. And now go into a fall without films …
Netflix has films.
And not just small films, but also the new David Fincher, the new Ron Howard, which is based on a # 1 bestseller, a new Zach Snyder zombie epic, and even the new Aaron Sorkin film, which many are pioneers for consider this year's Academy Awards with the lack of available content.
Not to mention the continuation of internal success stories The Christmas chronicles, The princess counter, and The babysitter.
Yes, in a year when Bad Boys 3 appears to be the king of the box office in February, Netflix will make great strides and take power. It's hard to imagine another streamer in such a perfect situation. While other services can load the content of previously published material, they are not lacking in fun and celebrated projects that Netflix can launch on schedule.
