Netflix just released a series of news items about the still-in-production Zack Snyder zombie-action heist film Army of the Dead, due to be released in 2021. Big news indeed: a new movie prequel and anime series. Shay Hatten, one of the writers on the Army of the Dead, will write both the prequel and anime series.

Snyder: “I'm excited to have the opportunity to work with Netflix again as we expand the universe of the Army of the Dead with an international prequel as well as explore the visually dynamic world of animation. It's been a great collaboration and we're thrilled that Netflix is seeing this as as big an IP as we are. "

The Grimme Prize winner Matthias Schweighöfer will both direct and play in the multilingual prequel mentioned above, which will follow his army of the dead figure "Ludwig Dieter". The film is being produced by Deborah Snyder, Zack Snyder and Wesley Coller from The Stone Quarry and Schweighöfer and Dan Maag from PANTALEON Films from Germany.

“It was a great pleasure to be part of this wonderful ensemble around Zack Synder – a fascinating project. I am glad that it is now being developed on so many different levels, "said Schweighöfer.

The new anime series "Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas" tells the creation story of Scott (Dave Bautista) and his rescue team during the first fall of Vegas when they confront the mysterious source of the zombie outbreak. Zack Snyder will direct two episodes; Jay Oliva (Batman: The Dark Knight Returns and the upcoming Netflix Original Anime Series Trese) will be both show running and directing two episodes. The series is produced by Deborah Snyder, Zack Snyder, Coller of The Stone Quarry along with Oliva and Hatten as executive producers. Bautista, Ana de la Reguera, Tig Notaro, Omari Hardwick and Ella Purnell will repeat their roles in the anime series.

Army of the Dead marks Snyder's return to the zombie genre. In 2004 he made his directorial debut with the cult classic Dawn of the Dead for Universal Pictures. Army of the Dead features an international all-star cast led by Bautista, Purnell, De La Reguera, Theo Rossi, Huma Qureshi and Hardwick. Notaro, Hiroyuki Sanada, Garret Dillahunt, Schweighöfer, Raúl Castillo, Nora Arnezeder and Samantha Win are produced by Deborah Snyder, Zack Snyder and Coller from The Stone Quarry. The film, which follows a group of mercenaries into a zombie-infested Las Vegas, Nevada, attempting to perpetrate the biggest heist ever attempted, will be released on Netflix in 2021.
